In the latest heavy downpour during the September rainy season, 30 litres per square metre of water fell on Tuesday, in a storm that mixed rain, hailstones and wind, flooding streets and causing damage to vehicles and homes.

A tree was knocked down blocking the main coastal road through Torrevieja and other streets were closed off as a deluge of water carried cars and street fixtures along the newly created rivers.

A considerable amount of sand had already been washed away from the beaches of Torrevieja, the Orihuela Costa and beyond, with this latest storm adding to the apparent destruction of the holidaying area.

A weather warning was in place for the whole area for rain and thunderstorms.
