The Councillor for Culture in Torrevieja, Alejandro Blanco, explained in an interview this week that it might become necessary to close down the Municipal Theatre in the centre of the town in order to carry out work to legalise the building.

Despite having been opened since 2006, the councillor explained that the building does not have the appropriate business and safety licences and has been operating illegally since it opened. After the situation was largely ignored by the previous government, it is now up to the new administration to reverse the situation, so that all the necessary safety and security changes can be put in place.

The building, which was controversial even before it was built after a listed building was demolished to make way, is also subject to a court case regarding massive overspend of more than 3 million euro in construction.
