The government of Torrevieja has criticised the provincial tourism representatives for “torpedoing” their way into the limelight during the start of the ninth stage of the La Vuelta cycling tour of Spain on Sunday.

The councillor for sports, Pablo Samper, said that the actions of the provincial board, which is led by former mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, was “childish and absurd” with the sole intention of seeking political visibility for the Partido Popular, undermining the work of the local government team.

The Alicante provincial government provided a display truck from which Eduardo Dolón gave a speech prior to the race which was played to hundreds of countries around the world and has been praised for highlighting the area in order to increase tourism, although Torrevieja itself was only actually featured for a few minutes.
