A man, believed to be 78 years of age, has become the latest victim of the sea this summer, having apparently drowned in Torrevieja.
The man was swimming in a coastal and sandy area in the Acequión area, popular with bathers, but an area not officially classed as a beach, and therefore swimming is prohibited as the classification of the area is that of a port or harbor.
Despite the fact that the area is sandy, has litter bins and ever a local refreshment area, because it is not classed as a beach, no life guards are on duty in the area.
It is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred in this location with most of the bathers unaware of the dangers posed by this particular site.
The man was on medication for a heart condition and the first hypothesis is that he may have had a heart attack whilst swimming.
