The missing ex-boyfriend of a woman found dead alongside her friend in the province of Cuenca was arrested in Romania last Friday morning. As reported in The Courier last week, Sergio Morate Garcés vanished on August 6th, the same day as Ukrainian, Marina Okarynska, 24 and Laura del Hoyo Chamón, 26, went missing. Laura’s car was found near the Morate-Garcés family home in the countryside the following day.
The women had gone to Sergio’s house to collect Marina’s personal belongings which she had left there after the relationship broke up, and were both found dead on Wednesday last week on the banks of the river Huécar. Sergio was found in the early hours of last Friday morning in Romania, having driven all the way there and pointedly not used his mobile phone or credit cards in a bid to avoid being traced.
Initial suspicions centred on his having decamped to France. Inquiries to date hint that he planned the crime down to the last detail, having purchased limestone from a builder’s yard before the women’s visit. They were partially buried in limestone when they were found, and it appears the killer had attempted to burn the bodies, without success. He has protested his innocence to the Romanian media, and now faces being sent back to Spain to face murder charges, though he claims that he fears for his life if he is extradited.
