Elche’s newly formed council is trying to break the logjam over licenses so that work can begin on restoring the deserted Arenales del Sol hotel which faces onto the local Arenales beach. Work was due to start at the end of last year to totally renovate the empty building which has been empty since 1979, but the licenses have been mired in delays, with newly elected mayor, Cristina Martinez, wanting to find out what they need from the Ministry of Development.

The two year eleven million euro project would see it become a four-star resort complex(design pictured) with 100 bedrooms, as well as restaurants, bars, function rooms, and spas which will be open to non-residents. The deserted building has become a local eyesore over the last 35 years, and is now owned by Princesol, which is a subsidiary company of the Group Benidorm Hotels chain, which already has four hotels in the Northern Costa Blanca resort.
