Five defibrillators have been assigned to the Elche muncipality beaches to help save the lives of visitors suffering a cardiac arrest. The devices are now available to use at the beaches at La Marina, El Rebollo, El Altet, Arenales and Carabassí. Emergency services were pressed into action at Arenales on Monday morning when a 78 year man was pulled unconscious out of the water, before he was revived by medics and taken to Alicante General Hospital.

Meanwhile, an 88 year old man died last Sunday lunchtime when he was bathing at Veneziola beach in La Manga. Paramedics were unable to revive him after he was taken ashore by fellow swimmers. It was the third such seaside death in just two days involving elderly bathers in the Murcia region with fatalities happening at San Pedro del Pinatar and Cieza.
