A Guardia Civil bomb detonation officer died in an explosion in a garage in Almería last week. The 50-year-old, a highly-experienced member of the TEDAX explosives team, is thought to have been detonating a device under controlled conditions when the building caught fire and blew up.

A massive column of smoke was visible all over the south-eastern city, and two fire engines with 12 emergency workers were needed to tackle the blaze.

The garage is next door to the Guardia Civil station in Almería where the deceased officer had been based for over a decade.
