Pigeons are set to go on the pill in one Spanish town. Councillors in Badia del Vallès have voted to feed the birds with a special contraceptive in a bid to bring soaring numbers down, as the Catalan politicians want to slash the breed’s population by 80% in the next four or five years.

The feathered animals will be fed with Ovistop – essentially corn kernels coated with bird birth control drug nicarbazin. It will be distributed during the height of this year’s breeding season, which is from now until September.

Officials said that a pair of pigeons can produce 48 descendants in just one year.
