Aircraft pilots over Spain had an extra potential hazard to watch out for last Saturday after 70 thousand racing pigeons were released from Valencia to head back home to Portugal.

Warnings were issued for pilots to take care when flying below two thousand feet, in case the birds (flying in groups of up to 20) caught them by surprise.

The pigeons had been shipped overland to Valencia, before homing and flapping their way back to their familiar Portuguese territory.
