The Guardia Civil are trying to find a heartless individual in the Cartagena area who abandoned three puppies by chucking them into a pond of tar. The Guardia’s wildlife branch, Seprona, is leading the hunt, with the local El Portalico dog refugee rescuing and cleaning the dogs up, though sadly one of them didn’t survive.

The pond of tar at Albujon, halflway between Cartagena and Torre Pacheco, was under a foot deep, but it was enough to have the puppies trapped and covered as the tar solidified. A neighbour heard the barking and called for help.

The puppies are a cross breed between a podenco and galgo and are ideal for hunting, and so the Guardia Civil are concentrating their investigation on hunters, hoping the help of the outraged public who help them track down the individual involved. He would face a charge of animal cruelty which carries an eighteen month prison sentence, as well as substantial fines.
