Pilots flying over Spain and Portugal were given a warning to look out for birds at the weekend, after 70,000 racing pigeons were released from Valencia on a journey back to Portugal.

Pilots were warned to take extra care when below 2,000 feet on account of the birds heading west from Valencia, probably in groups of between 5 and 20.

The birds had all travelled by road to Valencia before being released on Saturday in order to race back to their Portuguese homes.
