Details were revealed this week how officers from the Guardia Civil stopped a Portuguese woman at Madrid airport in April, in order to question her as to why she was varying 55,000 euro in cash in her hand luggage.

During the routine check, it transpired that the woman was Dolores Aveiro, the mother of footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The maximum amount allowed to be carried without declaring it is 10,000 euro, without the risk of a fine and confiscation. After a short discussion, the lady was allowed to continue on her journey to Lisbon, albeit carrying just 10,000 euro.
