The Guardia Civil, in collaboration with the British Border Force, have rescued 589 immigrants in Italian waters, south of the island of Lampedusa.

The Guardia Civil were using a boat which is currently permanently deployed on border patrols, Río Segura, and was assisted by their British colleagues to rescue the immigrants off their boats and take them to safety.

Almost 6,000 immigrants were rescued in joint operations during the course of this weekend alone in the Mediterranean.
