San Fulgencio mayor Carlos Ramírez postponed Tuesday’s plenary meeting of the council when legally he would have had to explain why he had been barred from public office last autumn for over eight years on a charge of prevarication.

The Mayor, who quit the Partido Popular at the end of last year, announced that the meeting could not take place for “personal reasons”, and did not expand on the reasons.

Ramirez is appealing the verdict and sentence, but there have been calls for him and his former PP-colleagues to quit, as they continue to run the San Fulgencio council.

One of the opposition parties, the PSOE socialists, described the postponement as “shameful”, and that the Mayor should have resigned from office already.
