The Wednesday market in La Mata will definitely switch sites between this Easter and the summer, according to Torrevieja’s Markets councillor, Javier Manzanares.

That’s despite objections raised by a La Mata business representative in a meeting held with Manzanares and Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón on Tuesday.

The Información newspaper has reported that the President of the La Mata Merchants Association, David Sánchez, walked out of the meeting after five minutes, saying that local shop and business owners in the area would be hit by the market site switch, and that other alternatives were not properly considered by the council.

A new site between Avenida de Francia and Avenida de Holanda was recently approved by the Torrevieja local police and council officers, after consultation with the stall holders, with the current site close to the N-332 facing a risk of subsidence.

The final new site announcement was in turn a change from original proposals put forward by the council last summer, but it resulted in an angry response from the market traders who said that what was put forward wasn’t good enough in terms of access.
