A nationwide Guardia Civil investigation into a monkey trafficking ring has seen an Alicante Province woman arrested amongst an 11-strong group that have ended up being charged with illegally selling protected species without appropriate health controls.

Operation Parum started at the beginning of last year with the Guardia’s environmental group, Seprona, spotting a number of illegal sales being advertised on websites.

The sellers used false identities to try to cover their tracks, with the Alicante Province woman advertising herself as a medium, and has previous form in trying to sell monkeys illegally, as well as carrying out medical operations on them.

The Guardia ran their operation out of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, and vets and zoos across Spain, including the AAP Rescue Centre for Exotic Animals in Alicante, have been involved in looking after the seized monkeys.
