A 45-year-old Orihuela man was airlifted by helicopter after he fell six metres whilst climbing on Sunday morning in the Sierra de Redován.

Emergency services were scrambled at 11.20 am when a call was made by a fellow climber that his colleague had fallen in an area known as Sector el Rut.

The man suffered back and ankle injuries and rescuers decided to call in the Alicante Province emergency helicopter (picture from the Información newspaper), which hoisted him down to the car park of Redován cemetery.

An ambulance then transferred him to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela.
