Freezing temperatures across Alicante Province and the Murcia region have added to the drought problems faced by farmers, with vegetable crops being hit in some areas.

It’s a mixed picture for artichoke growers (picture from the Información newspaper), with the Almoradi and Elche areas suffering from frost, meaning that the quality and price of the vegetable will suffer.

Adjoining areas like Dolores and Orihuela report not being as badly hit during the first low temperatures of the winter.

Frosts are very common at this time of the year, but the problem for farmers has been compounded by the drought, making the land drier, and therefore the plants weaker in being resistant to low temperatures.
