Elche local police have shut down a cock-fighting venue in the Carrus area of the municipality, after spotting some roosters walking in the middle of an adjoining the road.

Officers had to break hard to avoid running over the animals and decided to find out what was going on, and spotted an open gate at an adjoining farm.

Inside the premises, they found 12 cages with cocks in them, as well as a concrete area that was used to host the fights, and a CCTV system covering the cages and fight arena.

The farm owner said that he was simply a breeder and that he would sell the birds to buyers outside Alicante Province.

Quantities of drugs were found with a potential buyer appearing as the police were in the middle of their inquiries, and he was arrested for drug offences, whilst the farm owner still remains under investigation.

Seven people were arrested by the National Police in July for running an illegal cock-breeding farm in Parque de la Flora.
