Tabarca island, off the coast of Santa Pola, is being infested by a plague of fleas, according to the people who live there.

The Isla Plana residents association says that an increase in feral cats has led to the problem, as a lack of cash from Alicante City council has led to sterlisation programmes being stopped, and the animals are not being rewormed, leading to an increase in fleas.

Association President Carmen Martí told the Información newspaper that her members are raising money themselves to deal with the increasing cat population, whilst cockroaches have been on the rise, after she complained that contractors from Alicante council sprayed the wrong areas.
