Melon prices have collapsed by 40 percent this year in the Alicante Province due to overproduction.

Yellow melons come in at a basic cost of 15 cents compared to 25 cents a year earlier, with the ASAJA farmers association saying that local producers are barely covering costs.

Competing regions like Castilla La Mancha have contributed to the problem, along with a reduced demand for melons from European countries.
