Twenty-seven people have died in drowning tragedies in the Valencia region in the first six months of 2017, according to official figures.

Seventeen of those deaths, either in the sea or in swimming pools, happened in Alicante Province, with the greatest number of fatalities so far this year coming in June, as the big influx of tourists to the area starts.

Death figures involving drowning have tripled over the last two years, and so far in 2017, three children aged under three have died at home swimming pools where they were not supervised.
