Only seven thousand spectators turned up at the Martinez Valero stadium last Saturday evening to see Elche come from behind to win their opening match of the season against a team that were relegated from the top flight of La Liga in May.

The game started brightly with Elche netting after nine minutes only for the goal to be disallowed for offside, and then Rayo took the lead four minutes later thanks to a powerful strike from Ebert.

The home side were back on level terms shortly afterwards in the 17th minute with Josete heading in the equaliser through a Matilla free kick. Both teams played positively and Elche went in front on 36 minute mark when Matilla converted a penalty after new striker Guillermo was brought down in the box.

That was it for the scoring and Elche had greater control of the match in the second half with Matilla crashing a free kick onto the crossbar, whilst the visitors exerted a lot of late pressure but could not get the equaliser. Coach Alberto Toril said it was the best possible start for his side and said he was pleased with the quality of the football. The Ilicitanos are away to Girona tomorrow evening (Saturday).
