Elche 2 Valladolid 2
What a difference a month can make. Elche entered May with very realistic hopes of a place in the end of season play-offs, and even(assuming they pretty much won everything) a remote chance of direct promotion. Over four weeks later, they have absolutely nothing to go for after a winless May and yet another draw in their final home match of the season on Sunday, which mathematically finished off the Ilicitanos hopes of play-off glory, as well as notching up a Segunda division leading 18th draw of the season.
Sunday’s encounter against Valladolid was witnessed by just over five thousand fans in the worst home gate of the season and was Elche’s seventh match without a win. At least those who turned up witnessed an entertaining clash which the home side should have sealed up towards the end. A goal from Roger woke up Elche after 25 minutes, and within two minutes, Sergio León(pictured celebrating with Isidoro) ended a recent barren personal spell by heading in from a corner to level up matters.
Pelayo put Elche ahead just after the hour mark, but a double substitution for the visitors gave them some extra spirit, and it was the fresh pair of legs of Juan Villar that saw them equalise nine minutes later. Elche did more of the pressing in the closing stages and a Sergio León strike hit the post later in a “what might have been moment” that pretty much summed up the last few weeks for the Ilicitanos. They finish off their campaign at play-off contenders Alcorcon tomorrow night.
