Two goals within seven mid-second half minutes from the Segunda division’s top scorer, Sergio León, earned 10-man Elche a famous win at fellow play-off chasing side Mirandés on Saturday. After some mediocre results and performances that cast serious doubt on the Ilicitanos being in contention for a  shot at the play-off’s, the team grabbed all three points at a team above them in the table, and a result that puts them back into the mix.

Elche were positive right from the start creating good opportunities in the first half and looked the more dangerous of the sides, with León hitting the crossbar, and then had a goal disallowed for offside. Mirandés though took the lead before the break as a Kijera shot was deflected by an Elche defender into his own net.

Things got worse for the Ilicitanos early in the second half as Noblejas got his marching orders for a second caution just eight minutes into the action, but then Sergio León struck twice with unstoppable shots from the edge of the penalty area to stun the home side, and to record a famous victory, which was thoroughly deserved.

Elche’s critics will say that they’ve struggled against poorer opposition this season, and they have the chance to set that record straight this Saturday evening when old rivals in the shape of relegation-haunted Almeria roll up to the Manuel Martínez Valero stadium.
