The Segunda division’s top scorer Sergio León delivered again on Sunday as the Ilicitanos unbeaten run now stretches to seven matches, and that after they had to play virtually all of the second half with just ten men after Pelayo got his marching orders for a second yellow card in the 46th minute.

Ponferradina’s form contrasts with that of Elche as the visitors had gone five matches without a win, but though the home side dominated first half possession, they didn’t really create that much in terms of a scoring chance. In fact Poneferradina should have scored on the half hour mark, as Alex Martinez cleared a strike that had goal written all over it, whilst a minute later at the other end, a Sergio León shot was well saved by keeper Santamaría.

Ironically Elche, despite being reduced to 10 men at the start of the second half, saw some extra life sparked into them helped by some good tactical substitutions by manager Baraja. Javi Jiménez was virtually untroubled in the Ilicitanos goal as Elche ran the second half show, and they deservedly got the only goal of the match with 12 minutes remaining as Sergio León took advantage of an Alex Martinez cross to head into the net.

Elche are eight in the table and right in the play-off pack, and are just eight points off the top and the leaders Alaves. They have a perfect chance to boost their standing when they are away to the bottom side Bilbao Athletic this Sunday.
